How to find something you’re good at

We’ve all been there: you get to the start of the year (or the end) and you realize you’re doing something that doesn’t exactly fill you with excitement and joy.

Life isn’t always going to be like a trip to Disney World (if that’s your thing) or like a gourmet chocolate tasting experience (more my kinda thing). But overall we want to aim to spend the many hours in our life that we dedicate to work, doing something that is fun, challenging, interesting, fulfilling, or uplifting or a combination of all those and more.

So where do you start? Where do you start if you want to launch a career or shift your existing journey to a new path?

I think it starts with skills, competence and a dedicated effort to become good and I mean really good, at something and turn that into your path.

I’ve taken a few detours in my life, from being a horse riding instructor for children with disabilities - something I did on a voluntary basis and that filled me with immense joy and pride but wouldn’t have given me enough $$ to live on - to trying my hand at being a professional chef. With that idea I only took the very few, very first steps before realizing it wasn’t going to be the right choice for me.

As my corporate career began and I had the chance to experience different projects and tasks, I gained skills and clarity and then with a combination of opportunities, a bit of courage and trust in those ahead of me, I found something I was good at, which I then turned into a career. I haven’t stopped shaping my path and creating new turns and detours to take and it’s been a great and interesting journey.

In this week’s Midweek Mentor video I share my ideas for finding what you’re good at, so that you can apply these ideas to your own life and career.
