Is there something you’re trying to learn or get better at and it’s harder than you expected? Do you feel like you should be able to pick up new knowledge or skills faster?
Sometimes, you need to hear things explained differently for them to ‘click’. Then you’ll be able to absorb knowledge, make sense of it and apply it in daily life.
A couple of examples from my own life:
In high school I struggled with math and had poor grades. My parents enrolled me with a private tutor. For my last 4 years of secondary school, someone took the time to explain things to me until I understood them. Someone who gave me examples and methods that I didn’t get in school.
I finished with a solid B+, which was a far cry from the fail marks I had years earlier. Those years of extra help formed the foundation for university and helped me get A+ grades in each statistics course I took.
I often have observations and ideas from everyday life but don’t see the connection between them. Then I pick up a book that connects those ideas and observations and I can see things more clearly.
‘Give and Take’ by Adam Grant gave me a language to express what I’d been thinking about and experienced with people.
When you struggle to build knowledge and skills, seek out different voices and formats. They can serve as new routes to what you’re trying to learn.
Whether you want to improve your communication skills, learn a new programming language, get fit or something else: switch things up, find new sources, and see if this helps you get moving again.
What helps you learn? And what do you find hard about it? Hit reply and let me know :-).
Have a great week!
