If you’re planning to change jobs in the new year, you might feel like it’s a massive undertaking. Where do you even start with the whole thing?

Rather than getting overwhelmed by all there is to consider, let me share one tactic that can help you focus on roles and opportunities that are already in your ‘bubble’.

What tools are you using today?

There is no need to start with a blank page, because you’re already using tools and platforms that can serve as a launching pad for your next move.

Write down a list of the software you use to do your work with data. List all the different tools.

Here are some I used in my most recent job for example:

  • Snowflake
  • Tableau
  • Thoughtspot
  • Google Suite
  • Slack

What tech ecosystem are you in?

Take your list and go to the website of these (software) companies. They all list their partner companies online and THAT is a great starting point for your search.

If you’re experienced with one thing, e.g. Tableau or Power BI, why not see what roles are available within their partner network where you could move up or down stream within a tech stack?

You bring transferable skills and experience. You are working with tools they are using or have a partnership with. You are also a strong candidate to work for their customers.

If you’re currently working with Thoughtspot on top of Databricks and you’re employed by a health insurance company, the move to a similar role using Thoughtspot on top of Snowflake at a different organisation could be straightforward.

Focus your search via your tech stack

Rather than sending your CV to a bunch of random companies, start within your technical ecosystem where you already have connections and where you have experienced the tools and data challenges first hand.

It’s a really effective way to bring focus to a process that can feel intimidating and be time consuming.

Have a great week!
