But what could I possibly add to the data industry that others haven’t done yet?
This is a question I hear from many people who want to find their place in this fascinating industry but who worry they have nothing new to offer. Because everything has been done already, hasn’t it?
No. YOU have something unique to add and today I want to start looking at what your niche could be. Then over the next weeks we’ll dive deeper into finding and defining the things that only you can bring.
Are you up for the challenge?
I’ve made it my mission to help people see their talents to create a career that fills them with joy and a sense of accomplishment and I want to use this newsletter to bring helpful ideas, tools and frameworks directly to you.
Let’s start with two simple questions
-
Have you been working with data for a while and now you’re wondering what to do with your knowledge and skills?
-
Do you think there’s nothing YOU could add to an industry and a community that seems to be already saturated with ideas, information and people known for the stuff they do?
If you answered yes to either of these questions (or to both), you’ll find a bunch of ideas below and in the following newsletters to figure out what you can do next and how you can create a niche for yourself.
Rest assured, there will be options for however YOU like to show up, whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, whether you enjoy writing, talking, drawing or lecturing. However you feel comfortable – we’ll find a way for you to use your talents and skills.
Start with a simple list
This week we’ll start with a simple list, covering 5 topics to explore further. If you prefer something more visual, you’re welcome to create a mindmap instead of a list, or any other representation of the answers to the following questions. Just try and keep it to a single page for now.
-
What aspect of working with data is something you’re good at and you enjoy? (think of the tasks you do in a typical day/month)
-
What tools do you use in your daily work? (list everything that comes to mind)
-
What industry expertise do you bring? (could be a single or multiple industries)
-
Who are you surrounded by? (who are the people you work with, learn from, listen to, read from)
-
What other interests do you have? (list all your personal interests, hobbies, passion projects)
Next steps
Over the coming weeks we will go from this basic list to a complete picture of what unique contributions you can make and how this helps you define your niche.
If you’re eager to get a head-start, take your initial list and return to it each morning for a couple of minutes, writing down any additional thoughts for those 5 areas that come to mind. This could be things you forgot to add earlier, but also things you’d love to work on in the future or add to your skillset this year, etc.
I’m excited to help you find your niche. In the meantime, hit reply and share something you’ve recognised just by answering the above questions.
Have a great week!
