How to network at a tech conference

I am excited that conferences and industry events are increasingly being hosted in-person. I’ve missed meeting people face to face, and it’s something I really enjoy about my job.

As we go back to in-person events we all have to get used to those face to face interactions again and to navigating event venues, expo halls and social gatherings.

Here are my top tips for making the most of your time at a conference:

  • Decide why you’re going in the first place: are you planning to grow your technical skills via workshops and technical deep-dives? Are you there to meet potential employers? Are you looking for talented people to join your team? Are you interested in complementary technologies that will help you with your own technology strategy?

  • What are some topics you want to learn more about? What sessions are available on the agenda for you to attend? Are the speakers listed and can you connect ahead of time? Are there interactive sessions you can participate in, such as panel discussions?

  • Do you want to pre-plan your visit in more detail? If so, use the conference app, if there is one, to build your schedule and connect with others. Make sure to leave room for chance encounters at the coffee bar and to join spontaneous conversations in the hallway.

  • Make sure to plan time for meals and breaks. This is especially important if, like me, you tend to become a bit overwhelmed by crowds. Find an activity or space where you can retreat to for some quiet time to recharge your batteries.

  • Social activities like running or yoga groups, that meet every morning before sessions start, are a great way to connect with like minded people on a very level playing field. These activities are great for networking in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

Going to a conference in person can be a great experience and a big step for your career. Enjoy getting out there if you have the opportunity and make the most of your time, whatever that looks like.

Whether you’re leaving encounters up to chance (this can be so fun!) or are meticulously planning sessions and events to attend, I wish you a safe and successful conference season.
